In seeking to foster integrated and hospitable communities, Interfaith is committed to acting as an advocate for fair housing by conducting public education programs promoting community understanding and public support for fair housing. In addition, it acts as a resource to others seeking to ensure equal access to housing in their communities. Interfaith also acts as a mediator between providers and seekers of affordable housing. Interfaith administers several major programs:

  • Affordable Housing Advocacy, organizing and participating in local and regional coalitions to advance programs, policies, and bricks-and-mortar developments that create housing for low-income households.
  • Fair housing complaint investigation, audits of the housing market, technical assistance to municipalities, community education, and advocacy. Interfaith also provides housing information and referral to over 1,000 callers annually.
  • Homesharing, in which affordable housing units are made available to individuals with low and moderate incomes by matching them with home providers, usually older persons seeking extra income, services, or companionship to be able to remain in their homes. Since the program’s inception in 1985, more than 800 matches have been coordinated.

Interfaith also provides staff support to RELATE, or Religious Leaders Acting Together for Equality, an initiative of religious leaders to act quickly and in one voice for civil rights which emerged in the wake of the July 1999 hate-motivated shootings in the northern suburbs.
